Originally established as a community collaborative, in 2010 the BSI was formally granted the status as an incorporated not-for-profit organization.
Financial support from the Suncor Energy Foundation helped to establish the consortium in 2006 and to develop the BSI Centre on the Lambton College campus as a community resource in 2007. BSI membership quickly grew, integrating local industry with active community groups.
With Lambton College as a partner, the BSI is involved in the development and delivery of courses on sustainability. These are available as post secondary and continuing education offerings as well as shorter training specifically designed for business, industry, elementary / high schools and community organizations.
Public seminars & workshops on sustainability are offered monthly and bring in experts to Sarnia/Lambton. A wide variety of topics related to sustainability are discussed such as: energy conservation, environmentally-friendly alternate energy sources and how to incorporate sustainability concepts into new product development resulting in positive financial, environmental and social outcomes.
The BSI with the financial support of Suncor Energy Foundation oversees an annual scholarship for Lambton College students demonstrating innovation and leadership in helping to solve community sustainability issues.
The BSI has a steering committee and 3 subcommittees. Click here for committee structures and mandate.
